What is tankless heater?

Tankless water heaters heat water on-demand without the usage of a storage tank. When a hot water faucet or shower is turned on, cold water flows through the unit triggering the unit to fire up. The cold water flows through the small coils of a heat exchanger delivering the hot water instantly.

How can a tankless water heater heat water instantly?

When you open a faucet, the flow of the water triggers the heater to fire up. The water is heated instantly inside the heat exchanger. The time it takes to obtain hot water is directly related to how far is the tankless unit from the point of use. The tankless state-of-the-art burners deliver a lot of BTUs to heat the cold water instantly.

What are the differences between a storage-tank unit and a tankless unit?

The majority of homeowners in North America currently use a storage-tank water heater to provide hot water in their homes. A storage-tank water unit heats the water 24-7, even when you are not using hot water. A tankless water heater, on the other hand, does not have storage and heats the water only when you use it. Therefore the tankless units are more efficient, work for a longer time, are more secure (you can leave your house without worry flooding your basement).

Will I save money with tankless unit?

Absolutely. On average, the homeowners in America use hot water only for one hour a day combined. With a tankless heater, you can save up to 59% of your heating bill, compared to a storage-tank unit that heats the water all day long – 24/7.

Is one tankless unit enough for my house?

Yes. Tankless water heaters come with a variety of models with coverage of up to 4 showers running at the same time. Selecting the right unit for your house is very important. How to properly size the unit?

As we mentioned above, selecting a suitable unit to make sure it will deliver enough hot water is very important. And it is not complicated to calculate the sizing correctly. To start the calculation, we need two central factors:
the temperature rises, and the total number of gallons of hot water goes to all faucets that deliver hot water simultaneously.
The temperature rise is straightforward: the desired temperature of your hot water (usually 120F) minus the temperature of cold water entering your house. In Baltimore, for example, the cold water entering the house is around 50F. So, the temperature rise will be 70F (120-50).
Now let’s calculate the gallons: one average shower passes about 1.5 gallons of water per minute. Next, calculate all the hot water faucets in your house working simultaneously. For example, if you have a total of 2 showers and a kitchen faucet, then a total of hot faucets is 3 (2+1). So, the total gallons will be 4.5 (1.5gpm * 3).
So far, we got a 70F temperature rise with a total of 4.5 gallons per minute of hot water. So, the next step will be looking at the technical specs of the tankless hot water unit, selecting the model that will deliver 4.5 gallons of hot water with a 70F temperature rise.
